In handover from an intermediate access node (relay node RN) to a new access node, the relay node transmits a handover request message which identifies a plurality of access nodes as candidates for the new access node. The number of bits used to identify the access nodes may be determined based on information collected about the environment of the intermediate access node, or it could be determined based on an explicit indication of the number of access nodes identified in the handover request message. The identifiers can be listed in an ECGI/composite target ID field in order of preference. Upon receipt of a handover request message, the donor eNB (DeNB) to which the RN is connected may send a second handover request message to all the candidates and upon receiving an indication that one access node has adequate resources available, send handover cancellation messages to at least some of the remaining access nodes. Candidate access nodes can be divided into groups and the handover request may identify a particular group. The invention means the backhaul link to the DeNB is used only once to indicate a plurality of candidate cells for handover. |
