Provided are a negative active material, a preparation method thereof, and a lithium battery using the same, wherein the negative active material improves cycle characteristics and capacity maintenance rates. The negative active material includes a plurality of first particles containing Si, Ti, and Ni elements and composite particles. The composite particles include second particles coated with at least one element selected from a group consisting of Cu, Fe, Ni, Au, Ag, Pd, Cr, Mn, Ti, B and P.
