Needle jacks on the roataing cylinder of a multifeed machine are selected by electromagnets of which there is one for each feed. Pattern control, effected by selective energisation of the electromagnets, is governed by a set of photo-diodes, one for each feed, between each of which and a light source runs a programme tape having a track for each diode consisting of transparent and opaque areas in predetermined sequence. Synchronisation of control pulses from the ligh-energised diodes with rotation of the cylinder is such that electromagnets on a multi-section cam box are selectively energised precisely when a passing jack is opposite and electromagnet.
