PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a banknote handling device which is capable of easily classifying banknotes of specific types in the case of coexistence of different types of banknotes in one banknote storage box. SOLUTION: A banknote shift roller 504 rotated by a motor is provided in the vicinity of a banknote intake port E of a temporary preservation box 13 where banknotes are temporarily preserved. With respect to a banknote of a specific type like a banknote suspected of being false, a terribly contaminated or damaged banknote, or a forgotten banknote, the banknote placed on the banknote shift roller is moved to a right direction R or a left direction L by rotating the banknote shift roller 504 in a prescribed direction. The banknote of the specific type, of which the position has been shifted in the temporary preservation box 13, is transferred from the temporary preservation box 13 to another banknote storage box while keeping this state and is stored in the another banknote storage box.
