The term "initiator" is defined as a compound assisting in the formation of cubic boron nitride but not present in its pure form in the final product. The hydrogen of the material may be in a compound which evolves hydrogen under the reaction conditions such as a metal hydride or an ammonium compound, and may be used in amount of from 2 to 12% by weight of the material. The source of boron and nitrogen may be hexagonal boron nitride.
