Water supply system and method for operating a water supply system

The system has a pressure line (10) for conveying water originating from a water tank (6) i.e. suction tank. Return lines (16, 18) convey the water originating from another water tank (11) to the former water tank via a turbine (17) i.e. Francis turbine. A control unit (20) is formed such that the control unit controls the water supply system under safe position of water requirement existing in a water distribution network (13) based on an energy storing function by pumping water into the latter water tank and/or a power supply function by operating the turbine with a generator (19).
