[Also in Division G2] A coated film material comprises a support film of biaxially oriented and heat set polyethylene terephthalate, on which is superimposed a layer of a composition consisting of a copolymer of (1) 18 to 70% by weight of butadiene, (2) 0.5 to 20% by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, and (3) at least one other ethylenically unsaturated monomer copolymerisable therewith. Specified carboxylic acids are acrylic, methacrylic, fumaric, itaconic, maleic and crotonic, and the anhydrides of such acids may be used instead of the acids themselves. Specified monomers for component (3) are styrene,α-methyl styrene, methyl methacrylate and acrylonitrile. The surface of the support film may be pretreated before the application of the copolymer anchoring coat so as to render it more capable of readily accepting the copolymer coating, e.g. pretreated with trichloracetic acid or a halogenated phenol. The copolymer is preferably applied to the film material in the form of an aqueous latex which may contain wetting agents and emulsifiers, colloid stabilisers, adhesion promoters and cross-linking agents. The coated film base will accept with good anchorage a more hydrophilic layer, e.g. a layer comprising gelatin which has been applied from an organic solvent or aqueous dispersion. A light sensitive gelatino-silver halide emulsion may be superimposed on the gelatin layer to give a photographic film product.</p> |
