In an hydraulic transmission for an automatic washing machine in which a constant volume reversible pump 20 drives an oscillating motor 21 to wash the clothes in a basket 11 and, when reversed, drives the basket 11 directly to spindry the clothes, the usual restrictor 67 and relief valve 65 throttling the pump output, a temperature responsive valve 22 is also included in the exhaust line 41 from the pump to the sump to restrict flow thereto during the spin cycle to compensate for increased leakage from the pump with increasing working fluid temperature, and hence to maintain the spinning speed constant. The pump is shown as a sliding vane type in which the vanes are centrifugally urged into position, but it may be of the crescent or gerotor type. The valve 22 is formed from a plastics ball (42), Fig. '3 (not shown), e.g. polypropylene or nylon, placed in a cylindrical housing (43) having a restriction of slightly larger diameter than the ball adjacent one end. The housing is made of a material having a smaller temperature coefficient of expansion than the plastics ball, e.g. steel or aluminium, so that the ball expands to completely close the valve at the maximum temperature of the hydraulic fluid.
