In a vehicle rack-and-pinion steering gear the pinion shaft 2 is supported at one end by a bearing 7 which allows the shaft to tilt about an axis transverse to its axis of rotation, and at the other end by a tube 4 in which it is axially slidable, a compression spring 13 acting on the tube 4 to urge the pinion 2<SP>1</SP> into mesh with the rack 3. The spring 13 acts on a plunger 8 slidable in a bore in the housing and closely engaging the tube 4. A pin 11 in aligned bores 9, 10 of the plunger 8 and tube 4 prevents rotation and axial movement of the tube 4. Needle bearings 5, 6 support the shaft 2 in the tube 4. |
