There is provided a vessel 10 comprising a plastics container 12 overwound with fibre to provide a first layer (35, figure 3) of threads 32 overlain by a second layer (37, figure 3) of hoop wound threads, wherein the threads 32 within the first layer (35, figure 3) are laid in at least two different orientations thereby to lock the threads 32 in a fixed relationship to each other. The threads 32 within the first layer (35, figure 3) are formed as a plurality of bands 34,34', each band containing threads of one orientation. If the container 12 should be subjected to large external forces sufficient to crush the container 12 over at least part of its surface, such a loose wound fibre wrap maintains its structural integrity with the threads 32 remaining in a fixed relationship to each other and is sufficiently flexible that the container 12 can restore to its original shape over time. The vessel may be a pressure vessel such as a fire extinguisher. |
