Refractory oxides and hydrated oxides, and mixtures of such refractories, can be converted into spheroidal granules of predetermined size between about 50 mu and several mm. by a consistently controllable pulverisation process. The raw material is first melted and allowed to run in thin, vertical streams through which are blasted jets of fluid under pressure to break up the streams and smash the material against a wall from which granules fall, taking up spheroidal form under surface tension as they harden and set, usually in a liquid quenching medium.
|
