An inkjet printer is operated to identify a malfunctioning inkjet without generating a test pattern or analyzing image data. The inkjet printer transmits, to a print head inkjet, a driving signal for operating a piezoelectric actuator of an inkjet and receives a response signal from the piezoelectric actuator. An inkjet status is determined based on the response signal. The identified status corresponds to one of an inkjet clogged by particles, an inkjet clogged by air and an inkjet which is ready to spray ink.
