The present invention relates to a device for detecting rolling material and a method for detecting the rolling material, the device for detecting rolling material comprising: at least one resistor disposed on the side of a roller table to be parallel to the moving direction of the rolling material; a current measuring unit for measuring current flowing to the resistor; and a control unit for detecting the position of the rolling material from the position of the resistor by comparing the change amount of the current, which is input from the current measuring unit, with a reference value. The device for detecting rolling material and the method for detecting the rolling material according to the present invention are provided to raise the detecting reliability for the rolling material even though it is difficult to accurately measure the temperature of the rolling material due to water vapor and stagnant water existing over and on top of the rolling material, since the position of the rolling material is detected by using the change of electrical properties according to temperature change.
