Exhaust gas treatment system (ATS) for an internal combustion engine based on a PM-CAT particulate filter and to a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst placed upstream of the PM-CAT filter according to a direction of the exhaust gas outflow (EG), means for the active regeneration of the particulate matter (C) accumulated in the particulate filter, wherein the active regeneration means comprise an estimator at least for estimating an amount of particulate matter accumulated in the particulate filter and wherein the estimator comprises means for weighing said amount of particulate matter with a coefficient proportional to a retaining efficiency of the PM- CAT filter.
