The method involves attaching ultrasonic sensors at a rear (11) of a counterbalance forklift truck (1), so to detect obstacles in a surveillance zone (3), where detection of an obstacle in the surveillance zone is not prevented by a vehicle control system when the forklift truck is running in the surveillance zone. The detection of the obstacle is inhibited by the vehicle control system when the forklift truck is stationary in the surveillance zone, where the surveillance zone extends in side zones (12, 13) on both sides of the rear of the forklift truck.
