The method involves providing a controllable clutch (5) for selectively connecting and disconnecting an internal combustion engine (7) e.g. petrol engine, a transmission (4), and an operating device (6) for changing ratio of the transmission. The engine and the transmission are separated during no-load. The engine is turned off and the transmission is connected in a recuperation mode. A drive device (2) is operated in a maximum ratio of the transmission. An efficiency mode of the drive device is selected by actuation of the operating device based on increase in the transmission ratio.
