The present invention relates to a method for managing the power of a portable terminal and a device for managing the power of a portable terminal, the method comprising: a beam measuring step for measuring a beam received on an optical finger mouse (OFM) module disposed to be opposite to a cover in the portable terminal whose the cover is opened or closed by a user, based on whether to use the portable terminal; a beam strength determining step for comparing a predetermined reference value with a measured value of an image extracted by an OFM sensor of the OFM module with respect to the beam to determine whether to open or close the cover; and a power management step for managing the power of the portable terminal in a power-saving management mode or a general power management mode, based on the determination of the beam strength. According to the present invention, an idle state of a portable device can be determined, based on whether the cover of the portable device is opened or closed, using a predisposed OFM without installing a separate device in the portable device such as a folder-type mobile device or a laptop whose a cover is opened or closed, based on whether the user uses the portable device, thereby controlling the power of the portable device.
