PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light-emitting element with a simple element structure capable of forming a light beam and controlling a direction of the light beam by the light-emitting element alone.SOLUTION: A light-emitting element 1 includes a structure 2 formed on a minus-side element surface 63 formed of a semiconductor in a step pattern toward a tip as a light output end. The structure 2 comprises a tip end step portion 3 at the tip and a base end step portion 4 formed of at least one step in a width greater than that of the tip end step portion 3. The maximum value of an outer diameter of a cross section orthogonal to a central axis extending toward the tip of the tip end step portion 3 of the structure 2 is equal to or greater than an emission wavelength and is equal to or less than double a coherent length of radiation light. When the base end step portion 4 is divided into two sections by ZX plane including the central axis of the tip end step portion 3, the two sections will be symmetrical. When the base end step portion 4 is divided into two sections by YZ plane including a central axis different from that of the symmetrical plane, the two sections will have different volumes. |
