Provided is a retainer (5, 65, 95) for a constant-velocity universal joint, formed in a ring shape of roughly uniform thickness and provided in the circumferential direction thereof with a plurality of pockets (20, 80, 110) for housing a torque transmission ball, and characterized by the following: the retainer (5, 65, 95) is formed from a carbon steel comprising 0.41-0.51% by weight of carbon, 0.10-0.35% by weight of tin, 0.60-0.90% by weight of manganese, 0.005-0.030% by weight of phosphorous, and 0.002-0.035% by weight of sulfur, with the remainder comprising iron and other elements that inevitably remain in steelmaking and refining; carburizing, quenching, and tempering are performed as heat treatments; and sides (23, 83, 113) of the pockets (20, 80, 110) are formed by finish machining after the heat treatments. |
