PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stereoscopic image display system that has an excellent display performance by practically solving the problem that light which should enter one eye of the user leaks into the other eye.SOLUTION: An image display device comprises, in the following order, at least: an optical element that has a first retardation layer 20 on which L areas and R areas having mutual in-plane retardation in a range of ±10% of a half-wavelength with respect to the wavelength of reference light are periodically arranged, where an angle composed of a slow phase axis 21as of the L areas and a slow phase axis 21bs of the R areas is in a range of 45° ±3°; a first polarizer layer 51; and an image display cell 60 having a large number of pixels arranged in a matrix form and capable of displaying a predetermined image. An angle composed of a light transmission axis 51t of the first polarizer layer and the slow phase axis 21as of the L areas is equal to an angle composed of the light transmission axis of the first polarizer layer and the slow phase axis 21bs of the R areas.
