Recycling waste comprising rare earth elements, which is produced during manufacturing of detector modules, comprises (a) treating the waste in a first processing step by heating to a first temperature level, and holding at this temperature level, and (b) recovering the rare earth elements from residues obtained during heating of the waste, in a further processing step. An independent claim is also included for a device for carrying out the above method, comprising a heat treatment system for heating the waste which comprises the rare earth elements, at least to the first temperature level, and at least one treatment device for recovering the rare earth elements from substances obtained by heating the waste.
