A gamma correcting apparatus and method are provided to perform gamma correction with an optimum gamma value by allowing a controller to discriminate the optimum gamma value according to mathematical calculation data, rather than relaying on user's discrimination. A display controller(20) controls the intensity of pixels. A calculating unit(30) calculates average values of intensity of the pixels which have been gamma-corrected by using a plurality of pre-set gamma values. A controller(40) determines an application gamma value based on the result value obtained by the calculating unit, and gamma-corrects the intensity of the pixels by using the application gamma value. The average value of the application gamma value is the closest to an MI(MaxIntensity)/2 of the pixels. The calculating unit further calculates distribution values with respect to the intensity of the pixels. A storage unit(50) stores variables. |
