[Problem] To provide: a water-repellent liquid obtained using a commonly available and conventionally used fluoroalkyl silane compound having less than eight fluorocarbon units, the water-repellent liquid providing improved durability, especially both improved weather resistance and wear resistance, to a resulting water-repellent article without requiring special film-formation equipment even when the formed film is a single-layer film; a preparation method therefor; a water-repellent article obtained using the water-repellent liquid; and a production method thereof. [Solution] A water-repellent liquid for forming a water-repellent layer, obtained by mixing at least a fluoroalkyl silane compound in which the (m) of fluorocarbon units represented by CF3(CF2)m-1 is an integer less than 8, an organic solvent, and an organic sulfonic acid; the water-repellent liquid being characterized in that the amount of fluoroalkyl silane compound added is 1-20 mass% relative to a total of 100 mass% of water-repellent liquid raw materials, and the amount of organic sulfonic acid added is 0.1-29 molar times the amount of fluoroalkyl silane compound added.
