1276273 Chair frames; resiliently-mounted seats AMERICAN DESK MFG CO 7 April 1971 8965/71 Headings A4H A4J and A4U A chair comprises an integral moulded plastics shell, with back 48 and seat 46 connected by a flexible waist 47, secured to a supporting structure 30, Fig.1, by a resilient mounting 50 in the centre of the back and two similar mountings 54 spaced apart laterally under the seat, the shell being formed, or provided with supplementary means, so that the middle part of the waist is less flexible than the marginal parts. A buffer 42 is provided to prevent over-stressing of the shell in the event of excessive pressure on the front of the seat. Fig. 2 is a half-plan of a preferred form of the shell in flattened condition, indicating exemplary thickness of the various areas, which taper into each other; the edge portions 72 of the waist are thinnest, so as to yield relatively readily, when the seat and back are forced towards or away from one another, while the central part of the waist bends less. The thickest parts are 74, 76, round the points of attachment to the mountings, and the convex edges 64..70 which may suffer impacts. In another form, Fig. 13 (not shown) the central part of the waist is formed with stiffening ribs. In a further modification, Fig. 7 (not shown) a Y-shaped flexible metallic member (92) is secured mechanically or adhesively to the underside of the shell, connecting the resilient mountings 50, 54, so as to stiffen the central part of the waist.
