In a radial-cord-carcass pneumatic tyre, a ply of inextensible parallel cords is wrapped around each bead wire 14 with a terminal edge thereof disposed in the sidewall 11<SP>1</SP> and enveloped in soft rubber compound 16, 17 extending from immediately adjacent the bead wire 14 to radially beyond the ply terminal edge, the compound having a Shore A hardness between 45 and 55 and a modulus at 200% elongation between 450 and 900 p.s.i. In one embodiment the ply is a bead reinforcing ply 15, and the carcass may comprise a single ply of inextensible cords (Fig. 1) or a plurality of plies of extensible synthetic fabric cords such as rayon or nylon (Fig. 3). In a second embodiment (Fig. 2) the inextensible-cord ply is constituted by a single carcass ply. The inextensible cords are preferably of steel or glass.</p> |
