The drive unit (1) has an electric drive motor arranged in a housing (3) and connected downstream of reduction gears and an engine controller. A drive friction wheel (7) provided on the reduction gears is drivable by the drive motor. The friction wheel is arranged on a carrier, which is stored in the housing. The carrier is displaceable or pivotable opposite to the housing into a maximum extended position. A portion of a circumference of the drive friction wheel is arranged outside the housing in the extended position of the carrier.
