A portable terminal system and a method for controlling the same are provided to supply power to the portable terminal system automatically and execute a selected program automatically when a vehicle is started up. A mode switch(106) selects a mobile mode or a vehicle mode for automatic control of power. A sensing unit(102) senses the startup state of the vehicle. A controller controls a system to be powered on when the vehicle is started up during the vehicle mode. A program storage unit(110) stores one or more programs. A program selection unit(112) selects a program to be executed among the stored programs. |
