PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer compact in width size. SOLUTION: The printer 1 includes a pair of frame panels 7 and 7, a carriage 30 which carries a print head that prints onto a recording medium by moving back and forth along a guide shaft 33 with both ends supported by the frame panels 7, a carriage drive motor 35 which drives the carriage 30, a first and a second pulleys 36a and 36b arranged inside the pair of frame panels 7 and 7, and a belt 34 hung between the first, second pulleys 36a, 36b, and the carriage drive motor 35. The first and second pulleys 36a and 36b regulate the back-forth movement range of the carriage so that the maximum width for the carriage 30 to move back and forth is substantially equal to the width between the frame panels. The whole region of the width of the printer 1 can be made a region where the carriage 30 can move back and forth, so that the size in the width direction of the printer 1 can be minimized.
