<p>In an operative position the flue gas outlet connects with a stationary flue gas channel, and the joint between the two is completely surrounded by a vertically movable sand seal. When this is raised a bar connected to the hearth carriage is immersed in the sand seal, and a second bar beneath the sand seal is continually immersed in a second, stationary sand seal.
