A device and a method for changing a channel in a wireless mesh network are provided. A traffic calculation unit calculates traffic information of a data transmission link which connects a central node and an adjacent node, by measuring the amount of packet transmission which the center node and adjacent node transmit and receive for the central node to change a channel used for data transmission and reception in a multi-channel and multi-interface wireless mesh network. An interference value calculation unit calculates an interference value by candidate channel via a channel selection weighted factor determined based on traffic information which corresponds to a data transmission link between the center node and adjacent node and an interval between channels allocated to the candidate channel and adjacent node. A channel change unit selects a candidate channel having the smallest interference value among a plurality of candidate channels as a changed channel which is newly allocated to a central channel, transmits a channel change request message including information of the changed channel and the channel selection weighted factor and changes a channel currently allocated to the central node into a changed channel when receiving a permission message from an adjacent node. According to the present invention, network performance can be improved by rationally allocating a channel by reflecting an actual status of network and by preventing excessive change of a channel.
