A countermeasure cartridge (squib) 22 comprises a controller 23 disposed within the cartridge, which is interrogated, in use, by a system external to the cartridge. The controller 23 communicates the configuration of the cartridge to said system. The configuration may include information about the type of cartridge and the manufacturer. The cartridge is automatically selected and fired if its configuration corresponds to that of a misfiring cartridge.
