The complex phosphates contain at least one chemically bound molecule of a hydroxy compound ROH where R is H or an organic, e.g. C 1 -C 4 alkyl, group. Suitable complexes are described in Specification 1,322,722 and these may be blended with the substrate as a powder or a solution. The composition is preferably cured at a temperature of 20-80‹ C. or above (e.g. 120‹ C.). Heating may be effected in a mould having a heating jacket or between the platens of a heated press. Alternatively microwaves may be used. The mould may be a shaped flange or aperture on which a mixture of cork particles and complex phosphate solution may be moulded in situ to form a cork gasket. In Example 6, 25g. of a 60 : 40 dry mix of aluminium chlorophosphate hydrate and wood chippings and 0À25g. water were pressed in a mould at a loading of 0À2 ton sq. cm. to give, after drying at 5% humidity for 24 hours and curing at 120‹ C. for 1 hour, a hard block of reconstituted wood. The complex phosphate decomposes during curing to give aluminium phosphate which adheres tenaciously to the substrate. |
