PURPOSE: A forced charging system of an electric vehicle and a method thereof are provided to lengthen the driving period of an electric vehicle and be helpful for fuel efficiency by checking the filling rate of the battery equipped in the electric vehicle to forcibly conduct IDLE charge in case when the filling rate of the battery is lower than that of the pre-set filling rate and the electric vehicle is in a stationary state at not only P/N shift but also D shift so that the charged capacity of the main battery is increased. CONSTITUTION: A forced charging system of an electric vehicle comprises an engine(200), HSG(210), a main motor(240), a battery(260), and a controller(250). The HSG connected to the engine performs function of a start motor and a generator. The main motor is connected by the engine and an engine clutch. The main motor is connected to the main motor, supplies driving current to the main motor, and is charged by regenerative current generated when the main motor is stopped. The controller charges battery using HSG and the main motor after requesting N shift to hybrid control unit(HCU) on the engine clutch when the battery is in low SOC domain. Transaxle control unit(TCU) is requested to transform into D shift after cancelling N shift request to hybrid control unit(HCU) and turning off the engine clutch when the excel is turned on or the brake is off during the charging.
