PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a speed control method and a speed control device for an electric vehicle, which are capable of improving vehicle controllability and reducing a speed shifting shock immediately after speed shifting.SOLUTION: This speed control device includes: pre-shifting control means 76 for traveling an electric vehicle at a clutch engaged at the current shifting stage by an electric motor; and post-shifting control means 77 for engaging the clutch of a target shifting stage after the engagement of the clutch at the current shifting stage is released by a transmission gear ratio switching mechanism. The post-shifting control means 77 includes command torque applying means 77a for applying a command torque to the electric motor according to the specific vibration of torque fluctuation of a drive shaft 81, and the command torque applied to the electric motor by the command torque applying means 77a is equal to or more than the minimum torque where the clutch is always engaged.
