The method involves receiving a clock signal generated by a clock generating circuit, and generating a variable tempo as a function of the clock signal. A signal of beginning of a note or beginning of group of notes is received, and a note or a group of notes to be played is defined by an automatic music generator according to a set of composition rules. An audio signal representing the note or group of notes is generated and immediately played upon receiving the signal of beginning of a note. The play of the audio signal is stopped upon receiving a signal of end of note. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program for musical improvisation (2) an information storage unit storing a program for musical improvisation (3) a musical instrument in the form of an information processing device.
