PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal optical element and an image display device presenting high-quality display.SOLUTION: The liquid crystal optical element of one embodiment comprises: a first substrate; an insulating layer provided on a first surface of the first substrate; a pair of first electrodes provided on the insulating layer, extending in a first direction and arranged in a second direction orthogonal to the first direction; a pair of second electrodes provided between the pair of the first electrodes on the first surface, extending in the first direction and arranged in the second direction; a second substrate having a second surface opposing to the first surface of the first substrate; a counter electrode provided on the second surface of the second substrate; and a liquid crystal layer provided between the first substrate and the second substrate. The insulating layer has a groove extending in the first direction, provided close to a region of the insulating layer just below the second electrode. |
