The method involves braking a work machine after detecting a drive direction command at a time point to execute the reversing of the travel direction. The translation of the continuous variable transmission (CVT) is adjusted for reversing of the travel direction. The working machine is braked down to a standstill of the working machine at another time point through a secondary drive or a primary drive. The translation of the CVT is increased, when the secondary drive in a drive train before is arranged a reverse gear unit (1).
