Detection of living phytoplankton cells (PPC's) and/or microorganisms (MO's) in water involves (a) calculating the vatiable fluorescence (Fv) as the difference between maximum and minimum fluorescence values (Fm, Fo) (or determining the dynamic progress of a fluorescence induction curve (1)) in a measuring chamber and (b) calculating the number of living PPC's and/or MO's of a reference species in the chamber in dependence on the variable fluorescence. An independent claim is included for corresponding detection apparatus, including a fluorometer (having a light source and detector) for determining the minimum and maximum fluorescence (Fo, Fm) in a testing chamber, where an evaluation unit is included for determining the variable fluorescence (Fv) and calculating determining the number of living PPC's and/or MO's of a reference species in the chamber in dependence on the variable fluorescence. A control unit is also provided for a removal and/or disinfection device. |
