In the present invention, a communication device communicates with a counterpart device via either a current path or any of a plurality of backup paths. The communication device is provided with: a plurality of selection units for selecting one of two paths, the plurality of selection units including a main selection unit and an auxiliary selection unit that differs from the main selection unit; and a path determination unit for determining the path selected by the selection unit that last performed path selection from among the plurality of selection units as the path to be used in communications with the counterpart device. The main selection unit selects one of either the current path or one backup path from among the plurality of backup paths. The auxiliary selection unit selects one of either the path selected in the previous stage by either the main selection unit or an auxiliary selection unit different from said auxiliary selection unit, or one backup path from among the plurality of backup paths.
