Provided is an image display device capable of displaying the background in a transmissive state and in black while reducing the limitation on the position where a light source is installed. The image display device includes a color-filter-less liquid crystal panel (50), a PDLC panel (60), and a first PDLC light source (70a). The PDLC panel (60) is disposed at the rear face of the color-filter-less liquid crystal panel (50). When an image is displayed, the PDLC panel (60) is in a diffusion state. In this state, light from the first PDLC light source (70a) is diffused by the PDLC panel (60) and is incident on the color-filter-less liquid crystal panel (50), and the background light is diffused by the PDLC panel (60). When an image is not displayed, the PDLC panel (60) is in a transmissive state. In this state, the background light passes through the PDLC panel (60) and reaches the color-filter-less liquid crystal panel (50). |
