The shredder (1) has a cutting unit (4), a motor (3) for driving the cutting unit, and a motor controller (2). The motor controller determines the length of the already destroyed section of the document to be destroyed by a displacement measuring device. The motor controller controls the motor depending on the measured length of the already destroyed section of the document to be destroyed. A unit is provided for measuring the load of the motor. An independent claim is included for a method for operating a shredder.
