The method involves generating electronically evaluable lock signal by the lock (S1). The determination is made whether the vehicle closure element is in the locking position based on generated lock signal. The trapping protection system is provided to detect the presence of obstruction during closing of self-closing vehicle closure element in adjusting path. Another signal generated by trapping protection system in addition to the lock signal is evaluated to check the closing position of closure element.
