Method of manufacturing a transparent and birefringent thin solid mineral layer and optic component with a transparent and birefringent thin solid mineral layer. The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a transparent and birefringent thin solid mineral layer comprising the following steps: . a. preparation of a colloidal solution (3) consisting of anisotropic mineral nanoparticles suspended in a dispersion liquid; . b. depositing of the colloidal solution (3) on a surface of a substrate (2) by spreading in a thin layer while applying a directional shear stress tangentially to the surface of the substrate (2) in such a way as to deposit the colloidal solution in a thin liquid layer (5) on the surface of the substrate (2), the value of the shear stress and the concentration of the mineral nanoparticles in the colloidal solution being determined so as to align the anisotropic mineral nanoparticles along the direction of the shear stress which is tangential to the surface of the substrate; and . c. drying of the thin liquid layer (5) by evaporation of the dispersion liquid.
