PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an insect pest rejectant. SOLUTION: The insect pest rejectant contains as an active constituent an alcohol or ether compound represented by the formula: R<SP>1</SP>-Y-R<SP>2</SP>(1) wherein Y is a 4-8C alkylene group which may have a substituent, -(CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>O)<SB>m1</SB>-(CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>O)<SB>m2</SB>-CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>- (where m1 and m2 are the same or different and each an integer of not less than 0), or -CH<SB>2</SB>CH(OR<SP>3</SP>)CH<SB>2</SB>- (where R<SP>3</SP>is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group), and R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are the same or different and each a hydrogen atom, a hydroxyl group, or an alkoxy group provided that at least one of R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>is a hydroxyl group or an alkoxy group, and at least one of R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>is an alkoxy group or an alkenyloxy group in the case Y is -(CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>O)<SB>m1</SB>-(CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>O)<SB>m2</SB>-CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>-.
