PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-coated cutting tool with a hard coating layer exerting excellent chipping resistance in high-speed intermittent cutting. SOLUTION: The surface-coated cutting tool is configured such that a hard coating layer comprising a lower layer and an upper layer is formed by vapor deposition on the surface of a tool base-body. (a) The lower layer comprises a Ti compound layer. (b) The upper layer comprises a mixed-structure layer of an α-Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>phase, a κ-Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>phase, and a Ti compound phase. (c) In the upper layer, the content ratio of the α-Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>phase (=α-Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>phase/(α-Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>phase+κ-Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>)) is 0.6-0.9 while the Ti compound phase contains at least TiO<SB>2</SB>and Ti<SB>3</SB>S<SB>4</SB>. (d) In the upper layer, the content ratio of Ti (=Ti/(Ti+Al+O+S)) is 0.3-3 at% while that of S (=S/(Ti+Al+O+S)) is 0.1-2 at%.
