摘要 1364766 Ferroelectric hologram stores THOMSON-CSF 19 Sept 1972 [20 Sept 1971] 43389/72 Heading H3B Optical phase holograms are stored in an impurity-doped ferroelectric plate 10, Fig. 1. as a pattern of refractive index variations caused by non-uniform electron distribution, formation of a hologram involving the steps of uniformly polarizing the plate in one sense, directing intersecting object and reference beams 4, 7 from a laser source 1 on to the plate, reducing the polarization of the plate by applying a selected potential in the opposite sense, and finally reapplying the reference beam 7 alone to restore the diffraction efficiency reduced by polarization reduction. The ferroelectric plate has a substantially rectangular hysteresis characteristic at ambient temperature, Fig. 5 (not shown), and consists of barium titanate or potassium niobate doped with nickel, cobalt or iron, the distributed impurities forming traps for migrating electrons liberated by the incident radiation. Polarizing electrodes 11 are provided on surfaces of the plate normal to the crystallographic axis C, the polarizing potentials being applied from a generator 12 which also controls the positions of a beam splitter mirror 2 and a reference beam reflector 8 through alignment and displacement devices 5, 9. In a modification, Fig. 2, the electrodes 13, 15 are located on the major surfaces of a ferroelectric crystalline layer 14, the electrodes being transparent to incident object and reference beams 4, 7 and the assembly being formed by successive deposition on a transparent substrate 16. Erasure of a hologram is effected by the application of a polarizing potential of sufficient intensity, and partial selective erasure may be effected if the electrodes of Fig. 2 comprise two orthogonal sets of parallel conductors. A further selective erasure system is shown in Fig. 7 in which a potential is applied between a conductive grid 34 and a single electrode 35 within the grid. By adjustment of the position within the depth of the ferroelectric material where the reference and object beams intersect a plurality of holograms may be stored in a single plate. The radiation source may be an argon laser operating at a wavelength of 4880 Š.
