<p>A sealing apparatus 10 for use in establishing a seal in an annulus 12 between a mandrel 18 and a bore wall 14 comprises an annular seal element 20. The seal element having a retracted first configuration and an expanded second configuration and is free to move relative to the mandrel 18. When the seal is in the second configuration pressurised fluid from the annulus 12 urges the seal element 20 into sealing or enhanced sealing engagement with the bore wall 14. The seal element is a member which expands upon exposure to an activation medium, the expansion moving the device from the first into its second configuration. The apparatus may define a fluid receiving chamber C between the seal and the mandrel with passages 32 allowing fluid into the chamber.</p> |
