PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a grinding machine and a grinding method that always move a grinder in the axial direction of a work when a command to move in the Z-axis direction is given. SOLUTION: The grinding machine includes: first displacement monitoring means 71, 61 and 62 for always monitoring the relative displacement L1 of a headstock 20 in the X-axis direction of an absolute coordinate system with a bed 10 as a reference; second displacement monitoring means 72, 61 and 62 for always monitoring the relative displacement L2 of a tailstock 30 in the X-axis direction of the absolute coordinate system with the bed 10 as a reference; an inclination calculation means 63 for calculating the inclinationθ1 of the work axis with respect to a predetermined reference Z-axis based on the relative displacement L1 of the headstock 20 and the relative displacement L2 of the tailstock 30; and a correction means 64 for correcting the taper error of the work W based on the inclinationθ1 of the work axis.
