A substrate, particularly a non-metallic material is pre-treated with phosphorus sesquisulphide and then with a solution of a metal salt or complex to form a metal-phosphorussulphur coating, the metals being selected from Groups IB, IIB, IVB, VB, VIB, VIIB or VIII of the Periodic Table. The pre-treated substrate is then electrolessly and/or electrolytically coated with a metal such as Cu, Ni or Cr. The substrate may be plastics, cellulosic, ceramic, cloth, paper, wood, cork, cardboard, clay, porcelain, leather, porous glass, asbestos and cement and is preferably cleaned in an organic solvent such as trichloroethylene or benzene. The phosphorus sesquisulphide may be used as a liquid or a solution in an organic solvent in a concentration of 0À0001% to saturation, the solution temperature being up to 135‹C. The treated substrate is dried in N 2 or CO 2 atmospheres prior to treating with the metal salt or complex solution. A large selection of plastics substrates is examplified.</p> |
