The present invention relates to a device and a method for user authentication in an automation system. The device for user authentication according to the embodiment of the present invention comprises a camera unit which is mounted in the inside or the outside of an HMI unit as a separate device to photograph a front face of a user detected by a sensor unit; a communication unit for receiving the sensing data received from the sensor unit or the user front face image data photographed by the camera unit, grouping the received data to be transmitted to a user authentication server and receiving result information according to user registration identified by the user authentication server; and a control unit for receiving user information corresponding to the transmitted data and providing operation authority and a screen of the automation system set according to the user information.
